Stefano Samele

Researcher —

Stefano Samele is a postdoctoral researcher fellow at the Artificial Intelligence and Robotics Lab (AIRLab), part of the Department of Electronics, Information, and Bioengineering of  Politecnico di Milano.

Dr. Stefano Samele earned a Master’s degree in Mathematics from the University of Milan, graduating summa cum laude, before getting a second-level Master’s degree in Artificial Intelligence from the University of Turin also with highest honors. He then joined Politecnico di Milano for an industrial Ph.D. in Computer Science and Engineering in collaboration with Pirelli, successfully defending his thesis in 2025.

His professional career began at Deloitte Italy Risk Advisory, where following a summer internship in 2015 he joined the team as a Data Analyst and IT Risk Management Consultant at the start of 2016. In early-2017 he moved to Agile Lab as a Data Science intern, and shortly thereafter took on a full-time role there as a Data Scientist and Machine Learning Engineer from October 2017 through October 2020.

Dr. Samele’s research centers on anomaly detection in industrial product images, where he has addressed highly complex scenarios characterized by subtle defects and varying production conditions. His interests also include adversarial attacks and defenses, neural architecture search, and zero/few-shot segmentation methods. His contributions include key publications at GECCO, ICPR and IJCNN, and he took part in the 2024 ICVSS summer school.

During his Ph.D., Stefano served as a teaching assistant for courses in Machine Learning and Computer Science, and co-supervised several thesis in the field of Deep Learning.
