Nico Catalano

Researcher —

Nico Catalano is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow, working under the supervision of Prof. Matteo Matteucci. In this role, Nico Catalano leads projects in computer vision and video understanding, investigating how semantic information from text can enrich visual understanding and enhance the interpretability of deep learning systems.

Building on a PhD in Computer Science from Politecnico di Milano, Nico Catalano has made significant contributions to few-shot learning and segmentation—work that has appeared in  international conferences. In 2024, they broadened their perspective as a visiting scholar at the University of Oslo’s Digital Signal Processing and Image Analysis Research Group, collaborating on advanced representation-learning techniques. They have also developed vision methodologies for agricultural robotics and contributed to autonomous-driving research through collaboration with the Hungarian Institute for Computer Science and Control (SZTAKI).

Nico Catalano holds an MSc in Computer Science and Engineering (EIT Digital dual-degree, KTH/Eötvös Loránd University) with a specialization in Autonomous Systems, and a BSc in Computer Science and Engineering from Politecnico di Milano.

Their ongoing work at AIRLab advances the frontier of explainable AI by fusing visual and textual modalities to build smarter, more transparent machine-learning models.
